Lead - Operations and Labor Planning

As a DC Operations and Labor Planning Specialist in the Operations Excellence team, you will play an integral role in enabling American Eagle Outfitters’ distribution network to achieve increased processing capabilities in order to best support the optimized performance of our Supply Chain. You will work with the Manager-Production Planning to convert aggregate labor requirements into an executable staffing plan on a daily and weekly basis. You will help develop staffing solutions that use the ideal mix of AEO associates, temp labor and innovative solutions such as flexible schedules with crowd-sourcing to optimally match the work needs with available labor. You will spend time on DC floor understanding the day in the life of each work-type and identify opportunities to standardize and improve staffing plans. You will provide monthly labor budget forecasts for your DC and monitor any variance in a timely manner. You will lead weekly business reviews with DC directors and HR to incorporate a culture of operations excellence in staffing. You will have exposure to the DC operations as well as the broader supply chain initiatives at AEO and will be an active participant in driving the company’s strategy.

Your responsibilities include:
  • Developing a labor plan from the business volume projections coupled with anticipated productivity levels and projected process path flow rates.
  • Using the labor plan as an input, prepare the shift rosters by department.  The rosters will be prepared and locked in at least one day in advance and projected three weeks in advance.
  • Be an experimenter: spend time daily on the floor watching various activities and understand how the staffing plan is being translated into real work; innovate on improvement opportunities
  • Developing tools that enhance our abilities to labor plan, staff, forecast and execute in accordance with AE’s supply chain strategy.
  • Performing a wide variety of data analyses in various formats, using different applications, and extracting data from various data warehouses and repositories.  You will turn data into useful information and daily/weekly reports
  • Performing daily analysis of operational metrics and producing reports that will indicate the level of daily compliance with prescribed plans; this will be in the form of plan versus actual performance.
  • Data collection and organizing for budget preparation in partnership with the Sr Manager - Operations Excellence, Manager of DC Production Planning and DC leadership teams.
  • Periodic monitoring of budgets and productivity through recurring report generation. Identification of budget compliance issues in a timely fashion.
  • Ensuring all process improvement initiatives support the long-term strategic needs of the DCs (including but not limited to automation, innovation and other process improvement topics) and building/managing the capital outlay.
  • Partnering with supply chain strategy leadership to develop baseline financial metrics to document savings and benefits impacts of projects and initiatives.
  • Actively partnering with leadership across the Supply Chain and DC network to ensure alignment and best-practices cross-sharing where appropriate.
  • Assisting various project teams as required.
  • Attending in and participating in meetings as required; including with contingent labor providers
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned.

Experience required:

  • Data driven, analytical thinking; ability to apply mathematics / analysis to quantify problems and impacts made by improvements to process
  • Strong experience with Microsoft Excel, intermediate skill level preferred
  • Knowledge of SQL, Python and simulation/modeling tools highly desirable. Passion to do deep data analysis.
  • Experience with Lean / Six-Sigma desirable.
  • Strong analytical, prioritizing, social, problem-solving, & planning skills and highly organized.
  • Effective verbal and written communication; soft-skills to interact with DC leadership team as needed.
  • Self-starter with a proven ability to handle multiple tasks, motivated by a dynamic environment.

Education & Experience:

  • BS degree in Industrial Engineering, Supply Chain/Logistics, or Statistics
  • 0-3+ years’ in data analysis roles
